Pathankot is the northernmost frontier and strategically critical district of Punjab, universally designated as the 'Gateway to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir'. Situated at the picturesque confluence of the Ravi and Chakki rivers against the Shivalik foothills, it historically served as the capital of the Pathania Rajput kingdom of Nurpur. It houses the mammoth 160-meter Ranjit Sagar Dam (Thein Dam), the historic 16th-century Shahpur Kandi Fort, and the rock-cut Mukteshwar Mahadev cave temples dating to the Pandava era. Militarily, it is home to one of the Indian Air Force's premier forward fighter airbases.
